Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ), gave the following statement after Postmaster Louis DeJoy released his "Delivering for America' plan. The Delivering for America plan is a 10 year plan that postmaster DeJoy hopes to implement at the United States Postal Service (USPS).

"The United States Postal Service is one of the oldest institutions in our country and is protected explicitly in the Constitution. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our Postal employees have bravely worked the front line to continue their essential work. In an era where in-person retail was stopped, USPS employees delivered prescriptions to our nation's veterans and seniors, stimulus checks to Americans in need, and delivered packages to those stuck at home."

"Postmaster DeJoy's "Delivering for America' plan is a short-sighted plan that seeks to impose cutbacks to USPS, which would result in harmful delays and the degradation of service for millions across the country. Rather than cutbacks and ineffective measures, Postmaster DeJoy should instead work with Congress to achieve real USPS reform by such measures as eliminating the retirement health benefit pre-funding mandate for USPS employees."

"As House Democrats continue passing legislation that works for the American people the needs of the USPS will not be forgotten. As Congress works on a vigorous infrastructure package, I will fight to ensure this package includes the resources needed for USPS to thrive in the future and continue delivering a quality service to the American people."
